Backgammon Books - Promoting Backgammon

There are many backgammon resources, and good books available. There are a lot of people who don't feel compelled to purchase books to improve their game. However in an non scientific poll of people I have known over the years, if the material was freely available they would consider reading such resources.
A lot of discussion has been given to how to promote Backgammon, but I don't think it has been discussed as to whether backgammon Authors can help promote Backgammon more than they are.
I come from an open philosophy of sharing resources and ideas to promote things I am involved in. I mention this because I have a bias towards this way of thinking. In the case of Backgammon, my work on supporting and developing for GnuBG is my contribution to Backgammon. My involvement in the Backgammon community doesn't involve making money from it.
An idea I am proposing as a discussion point is simple. Would Backgammon authors considering publishing their books online, and make them freely available? I can understand people writing books to make a profit etc. But I am wondering if after a few years of the book being in print, those books could be made available to the masses for free.
I believe that free material (in the form of free published books) that are available to everyone could help promote the game.
