It seems to me that intermediate and novice players -- the very same people we want to recruit to the game -- vastly prefer to have their own divisions, as demonstrated by the fact that very few of them choose to play at the open level until their skills improve. How could it possibly benefit the game to force these people to spend hundreds of dollars to play at a level where they have no reasonable possibility of winning anything? I am reminded of the folks who want to do away with class prizes in chess for reasons of purity.
