I don't know about XG, but the other bots train the net based on cubeless play, and n-ply DMP play does limited lookahead, using cubeless wins as a surrogate for DMP wins. So it plays knowing that the cube is completely irrelevant, but its moves are based on stored knowledge about how to play when gammons are relevant.

As for how confident we can be that a 4-ply rollout won't overturn a 3-ply rollout, there's no precise quantitative answer to that question. One develops a feel based on experience.
