In Response To: One of my dealings with a USBGF director and match recording (Michael Petch)

Let me put all speculation to rest... Player X is me. ;-)

I don't have the time or the inclination right now to respond in detail to each of Michael's points, but I do feel that he paints a fairly negative picture of the events that transpired, and that he draws conclusions that might not be entirely accurate. While I don't claim to be right in anything I do or say, I will say that I always strive to address issues in a positive and constructive way, directly with the person in question, before airing any negative opinions about this person, or any organization they might be affiated with, in a public forum.

So, to clear the air, I will simply copy and paste, verbatim, the email that was sent by "Player X" to Michael, (to which I never received a response), and let you all draw your own conclusions. Here it is...

Subject: PRs for final match

Hi Michael,

Thanks for attempting to help me out the other day with locating the SHG match files for my first two finals matches, and for ultimately emailing the results. And it was good to see you, and so many others, watching this morning… I enjoy the extra pressure that comes with lots of watchers. ;-)

Just wanted to bring to your attention something you did that bothered me a bit. It’s not a huge deal, but I still felt like I should address it.

After the match this morning, you posted in the SHG lobby a statement referring to our PRs, stating that one was better than the other: “ On WC (Hige Search Interval), The results has Reza playign a tad better: http://www.capp-sysware.com/analysis/xg/URANIUM_nightmare73_DoublingCube_201012231215_00/index.htm (Reza being 4.9 WC to Justin @ 5.1). Thosewho went to this URL earlier may have to hit control-refresh in yuor browser to see the updated data“

I would have felt better had you run it past both players first before making it public. Generally, when I post matches to USBGF or GammonVillage, I email the players first for their written blessings, not necessarily because I’m afraid of some kind of legal backlash, but because I think it’s the right thing to do. The match was played between the two players, and I feel those two players should have the final say on what get’s made public, and what doesn’t, by a third party. Secondly, I was thinking about posting this match to the USBGF website. We’re trying desperately to create more value for our existing members, while simultaneously trying to attract new members. Posting the results publicly takes a little bit away from this value.

Also, your PRs were a little different than mine, despite our equal settings… not sure why this happens sometimes, but I got 4.9 for me, and 5.2 for Reza. Not that this is necessarily carved in stone (as rollouts may change both numbers), or a monster difference (this is very near equal), but I do feel that this does paint a different picture compared to what you posted, especially if you take into consideration the PR differences from the other two matches, which were both significant.

Anyway, if this is something that happens very rarely, it’s not a big deal (but it’s still a small deal, IMHO). But if this is something that happens often, I would kindly request, in the future, that you at least ask the players in the lobby (but better if you email the players) if it’s okay to post the final results there. I just think it’s safer to take the high road like this, as it can’t possibly cause any harm, and, as I’ve learned from my own experiences, it creates more trust, respect, and goodwill with others in the backgammon community… wouldn’t you agree?

Thanks for your understanding, and no hard feelings.

Justin
