You're right on those counts; I was just pointing out that the visual appearance of the triple shot after 23/18 is less definitive than it might first appear. I played around with at least a dozen variants of this position. 23/18 is still a candidate (probably best, if I remember correctly, at least if White owns the cube and/or the spare on the 8pt is moved to the 7pt) when you shift the position of White's blot to the 10pt or 11pt. The 12pt (quiz position) is the location that gives by far the biggest edge to 8/3* over 23/18.

I still think that 23/18 is strategically correct here and it's only because of a subtle combination of tactical factors that 8/3* comes out way ahead in the quiz position.
