Thanks for bringing this thread to my attention with the Nactation, and good job on it. Either of your fifth-roll sequences to reach the above position (64S-64X-32H-52U-42, or 64S-64X-32H-43H-42) looks great.

Hitting loose on the 5pt was routine in the 70s, but it's usually wrong (and often a blunder), sometimes even with a sizable racing deficit, when you can make a good point somewhere. Hitting is additionally inefficient when Opp has a good 6 to play (13/7) for his entering move. (Compare 21$-32Z-31 with 21$-62Z-31 on pp. 28–29 of Backgammon Openings. Opp's 7pt checker is a stronger "builder" than the 10pt checker, but that is overshadowed by the fact that it is already on a key point that can be covered with only half the roll.)
Thematically, I would play @ (anchor, Bar/21 23/21) here IF it left only a single- instead of double-shot on the 9pt. As it is, P (Point, Bar/23 13/9), directly blocking both back checkers, looks a bit better to me.
