Backgammon/Schools/Gambling

Agreed, the perception of backgammon as a gambling game is one that must be overcome. In the warmer weather in New York you can find people wagering on chess games in the parks all the time. Gamblers can gamble on anything. Skilled people can attempt to earn a living competing against the less skilled. What parent hasn't gotten their children a game that has a random element in it from the earliest of ages? Candy Land? Trouble? Life? Monopoly? What parent has not allowed their children to play games with cards? There is a difference between teaching a child a strategy game that contains a random element and teaching them to bet on it. Spelling bees have a random element. The message must always focus on the skill-game. Independently, we must try to change the perceptions of governments so that wagering on a game of backgammon is considered the same kind of activity as wagering on a game of chess, and that collecting entry fees and having cash prizes in a backgammon tournament is no different than doing the same in a golf tournament.
