If you make the 21 anchor, you often get into a game with 5 or 6 back, some 2-4 or 3-4 backgame. You'd lose a lot of gammons, but win a lot of games. If you safety up front, you get into less gammonish positions you'll lose more often.

Maybe my wording was not good - instead of mentioning 'without defense', 'without counterplay' is clearer and is what I meant.
