Tim had the right answer. I'll try to explain the procedure for using Combining Diacritical Marks, which I've tested in Excel 2007.

  1. Start entering the Nacbrac data you want in a cell, as normal.
  2. When you get to the letter you want underlined, type it.
  3. From the Insert Menu, choose Symbol.
  4. In the top-right corner of the dialog box is a drop down menu labelled Subset. Choose Combining Diacritical Marks.
  5. Select the mark that you wish to add to the preceding letter, and press Insert.
  6. The bottom of the dialog identifies the diacritical mark by name and by Unicode number.
  7. Character Code 0332 Combining Low Line Below produces a longer line than the Character Code 0331 Combining Macron Below.
  8. Cells referencing the source cell display correctly becuase you are not using formatting; you are using a Unicode character.
  9. Let's see if it pastes from Excel to this forum: E with 0331 E̱ and 0332 E̲
  10. In Word you can use the same technique. You can also type the letter, followed by the Unicode number, followed by Alt-x. Thus E0332/alt-x/ produces E̲. This does not seem to work with Excel.
  11. There are lots of Combining Diacritical Marks for the enthusiastic nactator, which you can explore for yourself. You can even use more than one mark on a single letter to get combinations such as n̺͌
  12. T̥h̦a̧n̨k̩s̪ to T̫̫i̬m̭o̮t̰ẖy͂ C̲h͆o̳w͌ I̿ h̺a̾v͡e l̶e̦a̽r͈n͂t̼ s̓ö́m͇e͉t͔h͎i͝n͒g̓ n͌e͠w
