Anyway it's not a big deal, and it might have roots in me failing to understand the context that USBGF operates in, which is very different from DBgF - you have a new federation that has emerged in an existing market, which already had tournaments, directors and a tour! DBgF is the very basis of Danish backgammon, if you want to play a tour, you got to be a member! Simple as that. (Apart from beginner flights, select weekly cafe tournament, etc.)

First of all, I have the utmost respect for the DBgF and all that it has done. Suggestions from over there always weigh heavily because of the wealth of experience and the results achieved.

But you exactly nailed the key difference between our two organizations. First of all as I understand it, the DBgF was started with a substantial amount of seed capital that permitted it to do its work without short term concern for operating revenues and survival. There was no organized backgammon to deal with in Denmark and when it became organized, membership in the organization was required of participants. The USBGF is faced with an existing, fairly well organized tour and has very little up-front capital to work with. We cannot compel any participant on the American Backgammon Tour to become a member at this point in time, and if we do not create a sufficient revenue stream to fund operations and programs, we are in danger of having to shut down. We therefore are not in the same position as the DBgF to give away things of value to the public for the long term good when the long term good is more threatened by the USBGF being forced to close its doors if it cannot attract sufficient membership or sponsorship. It is the unfortunate reality we must work with. I hope that in a couple of years we will be in a more secure position and will have more flexibility.
