While I certainly appreciate you going to bat for Nactation, and all of your points have at least some degree of validity, it seems to me you're overstating the case.

I agree that many of the objections to Nactation are unfounded (or in some cases arise from not caring to give the system a fair shake). There is always going to be a certain amount of irrationality spouted in the face of change (and it almost never comes from newbies :). But there are also rational objections to systems not yet proven, and without them there would no stability from chaos. That said, I view the incorporation of Nactation as an integration rather than a replacement.

If there were no notation system already in place, I would teach someone Nactation first. In fact, I don't use point numbers for the diagrams or in the text at all in the first several sections of my tutorial; they are unnecessary and would be a distraction or even be a deterrent. Later on, though, it greatly aids with explanations when I can specify points such as the 5pt or 4pt, or to refer to partial moves such as 11/9. An analogy (though imperfect) is that solely using picture-words only works up to a point when teaching a second language.

The sheer quantity of material already written in traditional notation makes it a vital system to learn. In an alternate universe, if that same material had been written in Nactation, that would reverse the paradigm, but as I see it, both systems would still be useful.

Nack
