“Would it work to simply allow the human to advance…”

In principle yes, though I suppose it depends on the structure of the tournament. In our case specifically, both players would advance but in different ways. We use a hybrid drawsheet structured such that winners are playing an elimination-style event while losers are playing a Swiss-style format. Players can play 4 rounds, win or lose. If you drew the bot in Round 1 and lost on an 8-cube in two minutes, you wouldn't have to go home; there are still 3 more human matches to play and a chance to cash. There would also be a chance to win 1st place, if the bot goes on to win and you return the following week and win that event. Losses don't "eliminate" you in our current all-human events, and that principle would be unaffected by a bot player.

I prefer the perspective that the über-WC player does belong to the club; it's just that she only shows up when it's convenient for the event. And she can be cloned, enabling her to participate in other local clubs in disparate locations simultaneously. And she never complains about anything, ever :)
