Harry Zilli effect?

I know a lot of players here love rating systems, and I know some have put a lot of effort into this. Good for them...if they like it, do it. But I can tell you that we don't need rating systems to know who the best players are...we have PR ratings from matches played publicly, and we already know that Mochy and Falafel and Neil and Stick and MCG etc. etc. are great.
We also know that some others who my not play so well technically according to the bots are downright scary over the board. How many of us would be comfortable playing Svobodny or Magriel or Wells or Gus for money, even though we don't know much about their technical play of late?
But what about the rest of the players who are not in the Giant category? I can assure you, having posted, official, publicized ratings of their play is intimidating and may even discourage them from participating in live events. Or at the very least, they could care less about these ratings.
The reason I advocate a point system similar to bridge is that I have seen, myself, what an incentive that is to participate. I traveled all over the US for a couple of years just to get red and gold points to become a Life Master. I know many people that paid big money to play with a pro just to get master points so they could move up in the ratings.
At the Chicago Bar Point Club, all year long, dozens of us do everything we can to make it every Tuesday night because the points accumulate and increase our standing and if we don't come we drop behind and might not make the team, or make it into the top 20, or whatever our goal is.
So if you like a rating system, like Chess, fine, but I don't think it's necessary; I think it will keep some players away; and I think a good point system that applies to club and tournament play and is nation-wide is where the thrust should be.
