Yes, that's correct - then it cannot be the finals of 88...

The position is from Communications of the ACM, March 1995 / Vol. 38, No. 3. (the paper Gerald Tesauro wrote on Temporal Difference Learning in neural networks - TD Gammon):

In the article it says about the position:

This situation confronted Joe Sylvester, the highest-rated player in the world at the time, in the final match of the 1988 World Cup of Backgammon tournament. ... His play was approved by three world-class commentators on the scene (Kent Goulding, Bill Robertie and Nack Ballard)

I'd really like to know the score and cube position :-)

I mistakenly read World Cup as World Championship, sorry!

Then we know it's the World Cup final of 1988 (which Joe won), and the format was best of 5 11-point matches.

So the match is to 11 points!
