"money game, Jacoby" doesn't need to appear twice. Would you put it on both sides, or on one? If on one, which?
Agree that it doesn't need to appear twice. I'd put it at the top since it's the first thing I'd want to know. That said, if it appeared again at the bottom I wouldn't complain.
I think maybe it's not so much that it's "too subtle" but that you hadn't noticed that the point numbering reveals whose turn it is?
I'm aware of the numbering scheme, and while XG may be consistent about it other backgammon software and books aren't. For instance my usual on-line client is JavaFibs and it's point-numbering algorithm is broken - the numbers sometimes change when the on-roll player changes, but sometimes they don't and often I see points 1-12 or 13-24 on both sides of the board. IIRC, I think I've seen some books that don't follow the convention either. And of course real meat-space boards don't have numbers. (c:
Given that, I wouldn't expect others to pick up on who's roll it is just by the numbering. It may be a convention, but it's deviated from often enough that I wouldn't rely on it. As you say, there have been many discussions in the past about confusion about who's on roll - if people are confused then the simple solution is to be more clear by stating it explicitly instead of assuming that they'll pick up on something that's currently not obvious to them.
