I have done a small amount of investigation of AtS play for early slots vs splits. What seems to be happening is that slotting plays have more subsequent choices than splitting plays. For example, after being hit, the slotting player might have a choice between anchoring and returning a hit on the five point. This flexibility allows the player to choose a game plan fitting the score. After splitting plays, far few choices emerged. Therefore, in general, slotting plays better AtS than a static analysis of the money results would indicate while splitting plays perform similar to what is predicted by static analysis. I haven't checked this for an opening 41. I would be intersted to see if my hypothesis holds if someone else is willing to check.
A smaller factor which is just big enough to notice is that backgammons lost after slotting don't hurt the slotting player at DMP, GG or GS. They do at money. This favors slotting AtS.
