An additional factor to take into account is how much timing your opponent has. For example, if you're likely to be able to zugzwang your opponent out of there, that may tip the balance towards paying later, and pay-later positions can sometimes look ugly.

Gammons and backgammons can also have an effect, if one play leads to a faster bearoff.
