Hitting looks clear to me in the left-hand position above. However, I offer the right-hand variant, where White's anchor is pushed back (from her 18pt to her 22pt). Now what?

Diagrammed below is a tangentially related position which is analyzed on the bottom half of page 52 in Backgammon Openings:

1O ' ' ' '5X1O3X ' '1X4O

1X ' '1X '5O '3O ' '1O4X

62S-32S-31

In the above (useful reference) position, hitting is tied with making the 5pt.

The other positions analyzed on pages 52 and 53 (62S-32Z-31 and 62S-32$-31, diagrammed below) are noteworthy as well. Can you guess in which one you are supposed to make the 5pt and in which one you are supposed to hit?

1O ' ' ' '5X1O3X '1X '4O

1X '1X ' '5O '3O ' '1O4X

If you don't have the book, you can find Julian Fetterlein's analysis of the right-hand position here.
