'Clocks on request' is perfectly fine. If you don't know who is requesting it (one of the players), then I guess you'll have to ask the director until you finally do understand.

I don't think 'preferred' gets to the point. Of course, clocks are preferred! That doesn't tell us when they will be used.

  • 'Required'
  • 'On request'
  • 'Optional'
  • 'Director's discretion'

    Unfortunately, when the latest US Rules were written, these options hadn't been used enough to find the best language.

    P.S. I don't like the use of the DGBF of 'Penalty' (which means the Director has imposed a clock). 'Penalty' implies someone is being punished which is a notion that really needs to be disabused.
