Rollout

In Response To: Rollout (Stick)

So, if you think its a drop, and it turns out to be borderline (i.e. your choice), arent you better off knowing:

1. Its a redouble for sure 2. Where do I move the stack to in order to make it a drop for sure 3. Is it the 20 number shot that gets it so close, or would 21 or 22 turn this over completely 4. Who am I taking this against?

From what I can tell, it may be a borderline take/pass, but really, you dont want to take against a weaker player in a money session (as that really takes away one of the edges you have). You dont want to take against a stronger player (as they likely wont make any mistakes, and thus wont give you equity).

As for dropping, if a recube is a drop, then does it matter the size of it? big drop / small drop, its all a drop, and you are realistically surrendering the same points either way.

Also, in terms of technique, in addition to hitting with 6s (as Stick said), you also hit with aces after a miss too, perhaps even a 3 (but thats REALLY pushing it, smacks of desperation also, which isnt entirely necessary).

I guess I firmly consider this to be a drop, despite the rollout result as it stands, and it would take quite a turnaround in order for me to not pass it. I dont know if this is a shared view or not. In terms of endgame positions, I find them often, getting hit late in a bearoff happens a lot to me (I play a lot.. and I dont think my bearoff is that bad, but it could be!), and am quite used to making late technical decisions like this. Repeating positions are very difficult to judge, as the repeating value is indeterminate (i.e. not finite). When faced with a decision like this, then it can be a best practice to find that its easier to pass a borderline take with non-finite repeating position threat, than it is to find a take when you cannot be sure.

So, I stand by your initial viewpoint that its a solid drop, close as the rollout may be. I also consider this class of position to be reasonable to drop whenever faced with borderline decision and repeating positions. Additionally, if my opponent is new to me, and they take this, then I am trying to figure out if that wet fin that just appeared belongs to a shark or a guppy. But am expecting it to belong to the latter, and will look forward to more positions that could be eeked out.
