Sometimes one can step into even more dangerous minefields, e.g., Myanmar/Burma, or Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf. The choice of name puts you on one or the other side of a tense political issue.

But "Calcutta auction" seems to me to be in the same category as "Pekingese dog" or "Siamese twins." The term has acquired a life of its own and it's not a "normal" occurrence of the place name in adjectival form.
