Casper, I think Chuck is getting at this:

You can play on, hoping to win the gammon (earning the value of the free drop), or even the backgammon winning the match.

BUT, if your position gets a little bit worse you might end up with better chances of a wrong take!

So you have to look for the negative volatility of your position, what's at risk rolling on from here?

And that really is the one big problem of getting clever with these kinds of positions OtB - you have to consider the volatility of each and every roll, on both sides of your optimal doubling point.

Typically I'm clever here myself, and the cube decision have to take into consideration your opponents style and weight that heavily.
