In case you didn't understand the term "diversionary," the point is that you should compare what your opponent will play if you split, versus what your opponent will play if you don't split. You're probably looking only at what your opponent will play if you do split, and you see all those hits. However, if you don't split, your opponent will make strong points and build a strong prime. These are just as devastating as getting hit. By sticking your checker in your opponent's face, you force your opponent to abandon her plan to build a prime quietly (hence the term "diversionary"). Instead she must engage you in a fight where your extra homeboard point is an asset rather than a liability.
It's important to learn to consider not just how many shots you're giving your opponent, but to consider what your opponent's overall game plan is and what the overall state of the whole board is (who's ahead in the pip count? what assets does each player have?).
