Here's a supplemental "puzzle:" I suspect that at least one of the players made a non-trivial error in the actual game, but the sequence in the above caption above seems to have only one (can you guess it?). Blue started.

As for Blue's decision with double 4s, it seems to me that A (Attack, 8/4*(2) 6/2(2)) is a standout. If White fans (certainly) or even if she enters poorly (probably), Blue can correctly play on for the gammon. Even if White enters and hits (except with double 1s), Blue will have a nice tactical advantage and in most of those cases a cash.

If instead Blue hits twice and White enters both (one chance in four against a mere three-point board), she'll have a take (or with doublets a dangerous turnaround), and even if White enters one (unless it's onto the 20pt) Blue will probably have to settle for a cash. Moreover, if White fans, which she'll do only 9/36 instead of 16/36, Blue has a less powerful play-on.

The six-checker 6pt really should be unloaded, and the fourth inside point while White is on the bar is a great place to put the extra spares. There is also the matter of efficiency: it is more difficult to make the 2pt than to hit on the 9pt, where the fourth 4 isn't pulling its weight.
