I'm starting to get a feel for the residual value of the "don't slot&split" caveat just by how extenuating the circumstances have to be in order to get into one of these tangles. The sequences that lead to them are quite rare (especially third roll positions like these) but I imagine that in a lop-sided match, gammon considerations must provoke W play slightly more often—it must be fun playing as the trailer in such situations against a staunchly-conservative foe. :)
