Favorable Review of Rob Maier's Pittsburgh Tournament

Rob and crew did a great job. Large turnout, wonderful hospitality and the schedule mostly worked. I think that almost everyone in the Main was done by midnight.
Bill Davis' judicious "no comment" may have been attributable to his impressive 6-0 start. He beat me soundly in the sixth round to be the only undefeated (Open) player on Saturday. Normally good enough to win the event. With this format Bill "merely" qualified for the second stage, and ended up tied for 5th-8th. After going 5-0 and losing to Bill, I still needed to win one more match to qualify.
The two finalists, Dennis and Ray went 5-2 on Saturday. They then had to win one or two (some with 5-2 had byes) additional 5 point matches to qualify. Ray won 3 more matches in the final 8. While not unblemished, Ray racked up 9 or 10 wins and deserved the title.
Rob deserves a lot of credit for coming up with an innovative format that provided everyone in the open, not just the winners, with a lot of backgammon on Saturday. Extra side events on Sunday provided plenty of action for those that did not qualify on Saturday.
Can't wait until next year.
