Favorable Review of Rob Maier's Pittsburgh Tournament

I have mixed emotions over this sort of thing.
I'm glad I play legal moves only and then I don't have to think about it or second guess myself. I was getting drilled by terrible dice Saturday afternoon by a very inexperienced player and -- despite my consequent foul, frustrated mood -- when he made an illegal play (advantageous to me), I never blinked, didn't think about it. I just hit the clock, said 'legal moves', he corrected the play, and we moved on. The drilling continued.
That being said, accepting illegal moves is within the current rules of the game, so I cannot fault someone who does so. Obviously, the opponent bears responsibility for his/her own moves, mistakes (legal or otherwise), and actions. I had left by the time of the subject occurrence and do not know how any match dynamics may have affected the decision -- though Calton appears to be a very low-key, reserved type of guy so I'd be surprised if he 'deserved' it by prior actions. (If someone has screwed me in the past or taken some shots during a match, I may well accept an illegal move advantageous to me -- but not under normal circumstances.)
I saw an illegal play condoned in Las Vegas in November against a very nice guy, and it cost him the match. He didn't even realize he had done it until after the match. That whole sequence left me, as a kibitzer, with a bad taste in my mouth; but that's just me.
Also, illegal plays are not to be confused with bone-headed and/or oversight legal plays. If a play is legal, no matter how bad, I accept it -- I have no choice in the rules, in my interpretation. I let Richard attempt to shoot himself in the foot in the Masters Friday, but his oversight did result in a legal play -- of course I missed the inadvertent blot he left in the bearoff with me on the bar. We all occasionally make the egregious oversight.
Nonetheless, congrats to Ray for winning the Championship and Petko for winning the Masters. Congrats to all of those with good weekend play.
