Stick said "I can also fault the tournament for not at least changing to Chiva's legal moves rule. (and fair play above all)"

I spent some time prior to the tournament thinking about the rules, and what I wanted to do about the ones I didn't like. I ultimately decided that it was fairer to use the set of rules that everyone would have expected to be in force, rather than the ones I would want, and to then try and make sure everyone knew what all of them were. At or near the top of the list is the legal moves rule (LMR?).

If I decide that my rules set is the most recent US rules amended for LMR, and publish it in the brochure, and announce it at the tournament, and post it on the wall, and tattooed it on my forehead, there would still be people who were not aware it was in effect. An LMR situation then arises for that person, but unaware of the rule, doesn't point it out or call for a ruling. I leave as a later exercise for the reader what to do with an opponent that we think does know the rule and was aware of the illegal move to some dubious degree of uncertainty. That person is going to feel somewhat to very aggrieved at this set of circumstances. Perhaps I will be judged to have not made a sufficiently diligent effort to inform that person of the rules, tattoo on my forehead not withstanding. And again, I'm going to do what about his opponent when we all rub our chins and claim to know that they knew what they were doing?

OR. I could decide that, cripes, I've got a big enough job already, how about I use the rules currently in force, that previous and current backgammon bigwigs, if not GIANTS, have put together and modified and placed on the internet. Then I don't have the painful tattoo put on my forehead.

So, you CAN find fault where you like, but I don't agree that finding it with me, or any other tournament director who uses the document http://chicagopoint.com/usrules.html entitled "US BACKGAMMON TOURNAMENT RULES & PROCEDURES January 2009" is reasonable.
