Favorable Review of Rob Maier's Pittsburgh Tournament

I have very much enjoyed reading the threads of this discussion having been involved in the "other" match to which Rich refers. And yes, I was the player who believed, and still believes, that the placing of one's own checker on the bar is in fact an "illegal" move, as opposed to an impossible move. I think distinguishing or differentiating the two positions because one was during a bear off and the other wasn't is a distinction without a difference. Rob's explanation at the time of the ruling relied on the "intent" of the player. Well, of course the intent of the player was not to place herself on the bar, but so what. Noone intends to make an illegal play that disadvantages him/herself. I'm sure Bill did not "intend" to make the error he made either. I fail to see any difference in the two situations other than that I asked for a ruling on the matter and Bill did not. I am not a supporter of "legal plays" tournaments and have come to realize that I am most likely in the minority. My reasoning, however, has nothing to do with being a bad sport and I resent being made to feel guilty for my position, which as so many have mentioned, is in line with what the rules have been for years. I believe that errors, like bad plays, are a part of the game, especially as it pertains to endurance at days long tournaments. Being able to keep our minds sharp and pay attention are two more of the skills that make one player more successful than the next in tournament play. To take that element out of the game, in my opinion, would be a mistake.
