Morality of legal/illegal plays

I have been on the other side. At our local club recently, I required my opponent's illegal play to stand. I felt just awful about it afterward, and decided this is not the way I want to win. More important, this is not the person I want to be.
Bill Calton's post demonstrates the beauty of the current rule.
(Player 1) With the current rule he is NEVER compelled to let an opponent's illegal play stand, regardless of the resulting equity situation. Nothing prevents Bill from correcting his opponent's illegal plays. Bill always can enjoy the satisfaction of letting his opponent off the hook.
(Player 2) The current rule allows illegal plays to stand for those that consider their opponent to be the responsible party for finding and executing a legal play on their turn (just as the opponent is responsible for finding and executing the 'best' play).
If your moral code judges the first player to be of high character and the second to not be, so be it. You don't need a rule change to be player #1.
