Illegal versus impossible

No matter what the rule is, noticing an illegal move after your opponent rolls and plays should stand. I don't think anyone has ever favored rewinding two or three rolls.

I agree completely.

However in the example given where an opening 32 was played 24/21 13/10 followed by a roll of 11, that is a case that argues for the illegal play not being correctable after the roll of the dice. If the illegal play can be corrected after seeing the dice roll, was the intent to play 24/21 13/11 or to play 24/22 13/10? Certainly after seeing the 11 roll, we now know which opening 32 play is advantageous.

If correction is to be allowed after the dice roll, and either but not both checkers were potentially moved legally, then it seems that the player who just rolled should be able to declare one of the two checkers to have been played legally and the opponent may then only correct the other illegally moved checker. But that is just too messy.

I think notice of an illegal play with Legal Moves in effect must end exactly as indicated by the current rules - when the dice are rolled. Playing Legal Moves can then vary from the established rule in that

1) A player may not knowingly condone an illegal play;

2) An illegal play may be corrected after the opponent's roll only upon agreement of both players.

3) The player who just moved may call "no roll" at any time before either die of his opponent's hits the playing surface and nullify the roll in order to point out his own illegal play.

4) It seems reasonable to permit spectators to also call "no roll" during the same time period since it can have no effect on play other than a possible errant disruption if both players agree the play made was legal. While the players might be ok with spectators speaking up before the play in question has ended, I think that should not be permitted by the rules, but could be allowed by the players. The preservation of the evidence of the dice roll seems secondary to the potential for a spectator's comment to interfere with the play being made.
