You mean after I stuck my head through a plate glass window?
Without the crutch of "bearing off" to lean on, I would have ruled that it was up to Ray to decide whether or not he wanted to condone the illegal play. That is the rule as I understand it. That is the ruling I have seen made in more than one previous instance, by experience directors. I have also seen more than one experienced open player put themselves on the bar, and after figuring it out, make no noise of protest, other than perhaps to curse themselves out. I see no rationale to make new case law on my own, when we now have an organization that should be addressing these issues.
If you want me to instead rule that it is not possible to allow a player to put his own checker on the bar, then have the rule drawn up and inserted in a new version of the US rules, or in a public position statement from the USBGF. That's a horse I'm probably going to beat well past its death.
