Illegal versus impossible

In Response To: Illegal versus impossible (Timothy Chow)

I see a clear distinction between illegal and impossible. An impossible move is one that could not be accomplished no matter what the roll of the dice. E.g., putting own man on bar; bearing off opponent's checker; leaping 6 prime; moving though both numbers are blocked.

The above types of illegal moves are easily discerned, and not susceptible to argument (although in the last case there could be an argument about what the dice showed).

There is another class of illegal moves which is not so easily discerned. For example -- moving or bearing off 5 checkers on a double. Or moving 12 pips on a 6-5. In those cases, there could be an argument over where the checkers originally were, etc. As suggested in my previous post, illegal moves that do not require any ascertainment of fact (i.e., where the checker was or what the dice showed) should not be allowed.
