The case of the checker on the 3 point being placed on the bar after a 2-1, I consider to be either a result of carelessness or cheating. If it is a result of carelessness, the checker was meant to be borne off and should be borne off. I thought we agreed on that, am I wrong? If it is a result of cheating, the player should be disqualified, barred, flogged, whatever. I assumed we agreed on that as well.
I believe the checker should be considered borne off whether or not it is beneficial to the offending player. I believe I can use the rules to support that position, tenuous though it may be. I would also not be shocked to be reversed on appeal.
I believe that backgammon matches should be conducted exclusively by making legal plays. I don't believe that the current rules support that position. I don't think I should alter the commonly accepted rules solely for my event. I believe they should periodically be reviewed and altered by some group designated to do so. I think if a change is proposed that is overwhelmingly believed to be beneficial by the members of that organization, it shouldn't be hard to accomplish.
