I don't agree that illegal moves, and more importantly, "impossible moves", are "rarely a problem". They are frequent in tournaments, generating considerable controversy and demotivation for newer players. Reasonable people, along with many of the posters on this site, can disagree on whether confused or careless players deserve to punished for lapses, such as putting own checker on bar. I suspect there is a high correlation between those views and the likelihood of having that type of lapse.
If you are not the type of player who will ever make that type of error, you are less likely to care about those that do, or you may prefer simply to not condone any illegal plays. But the very fact that this issue has generated so much controversy, and that many players shun the rule even when it's to their advantage, suggests that condoning impossible moves is an unethical or "sharp practice" -- whatever the rules may say -- that should be discouraged. Having kibitzers get into act to a limited extent may be the lesser evil.
