There's no saving the gammon, and a bg is still quite unlikely, so wasting a pip against the BG to slot the 4 pt in case of a hit (and hopefully another later to cover) seems worth it. Also note that the variations where we actually risk being bg-ed is where we roll small, in which case there will probably be several aces along the way meaning that we both get to move 19/18 efficiently as well as cover 5/4.
