Howdy Chuck,

You said: "Speaking from experience, I've found that installing Ubuntu Linux is as easy, and possibly easier than installing Windows-xyz. Then you get GNU compilers with the click of a download."

This is true, but requires a VM (as you note below) or rebooting.

MingW and Cygwin basically have a complete set of all the standard language compilers (Ada/Fortran/C++/C etc) built for Windows and will allow you to build native windows apps. Cygwin is a very extensive set of tools (many you'd find on Linux) including Perl, PHP, ssh, cvs that run natively on Windows as well.

Chuck wrote: "Dual boot (thus giving you both OS's, but can't be run simultaneously) is an option, but so are virtual machines (VM's), where you CAN run both OS's at the same time, e.g. if you are doing an XG rollout and want to keep it going. I've not done VM, however, so I can't say that part is easy. "

A VM seems like a lot of overhead IF just for a c++ compiler. That's just my opinion. If for some reason Jason goes this route I would recommend VMPlayer ( http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ ) - it costs nothing (But is a commercial application). If you want Linux under Windows without excessive virtualization overhead one might wish to look at http://www.colinux.org/
