The way I thought about it when I first thought about it years ago was there has to be some correlation between how close the player's scores are and the value. In my head I imagined a match to a thousand points. Now, if my opponent is leading 994-0 and holding a 2 cube his backgammon value is obviously almost worthless because he's so close to winning anyway. As that gap closes you will see the bg value rise.
For this particular problem at -6 -12 with -6 holding a 2 cube even though 6 points puts him out exactly which normally triggers a higher value the fact that he's so far ahead cuts down that value drastically. You can see the gammon value go up as you add point after point to the -12 player's score. In XG put the position in, go to analyze >> cube information >> gammon value tab. At the top left you can change the players scores. Toggle down the trailer's score 1 point at a time and watch the backgammon value go up and up and up.
