Thanks for all the advice. I went ahead with cygwin for now... if I don't like it, it's easy to kill off. I successfully compiled and ran the canonical "Hello World" program. Installing it was a snap.

The suggestions of Ubuntu are good, in fact I have an old laptop that stopped working that I wiped and installed Ubuntu onto, but I haven't used it in months. Maybe I'll unearth it. That solution isn't a good one now, because XG is running a lot, and I didn't want to have to switch OS. Doing VM stuff seemed like more trouble than it was worth.

My immediate goal for BG purposes is to write some Swiss simulators of BG tournaments. There are other geeky things I'd like to do, but that's the BG application.
