I also understand that we never really know whether a rollout result is producing the right answer,
This is not entirely accurate. For non contact positions some of them can be figured exactly and compared to the rollout results. These will produce the 'right' answer. You can also with GNU record the rolled out games and go over them afterwards to see where plays/cube decisions could have affected the results and interpret them as you like. Takes a lot of time but it can be done.
As for comparing the results of your 0 ply rollout (equivalent XG 1 ply) to Claude's 4 ply rollout (equivalent GNU 3 ply) it is no surprise you've found roughly equivalent results. I have done no study but often the results from a 0 ply rollout would match up with those of a stronger, more robust rollout. The problem is that beforehand we can't know when these 'many times' are so for the sake of accuracy, among other things, we use the strongest settings available for the amount of time we're willing to invest.
It should be noted also that while your rollout produced roughly the same difference in plays as Claude's, the absolute equities are still a bit lower in your rollout than in his.
