Federation/Organizations in Canada

Canada's large size, and small population make live event organization here much more difficult. Travel distances are greater, and more costly. It often costs more to travel inside Canada than it does to travel to the US!

It is not that there is no interest in backgammon in Canada, it is just spread out 4 timezones (Okay 3.5) and 75%+ of the population is within about 150 miles of the 49th Parallel. If someone held a BG event in the geographic center of this nation I'd still have to travel a couple thousand km's. Even worse when it is run on one of the coasts.

Garry Kallos is working on a Montreal event. At one time he wanted to get sanctioned as an ABT event (Not sure of the status on that). Montreal is a charming city, a lot of history and culture, considered romantic, a reasonable population, somewhat central in Canada and not so far off the beaten path for Americans to come up with their families (or significant other).

A friend and one of his associates is working on a non-ABT event in Vancouver this spring/summer. Even preliminary estimates have the interested parties at a minimum of a couple dozen (And it is just planning stages). It is my intention to pitch (in person) to these players (Okay, at least the oens that are Canadian) the idea of some more formal organization in this country. One of the main things though is that I see an organization here focusing on Live Play AND Online Play (events/tournaments etc). Putting a focus on Online events (as well as live play) comes out of Canada's geographical and population issues that are somewhat unique in the world. Maintaining statistics (ratings), providing a source of information, helping event organizers and clubs etc would be some of the goals.

I believe in starting small and not biting off more than one can chew.

If there are any other Canadians reading this that are interested in such an idea and wish to contact me about - please feel free. I can be emailed at mpetch@capp-sysware.com or I can be reached on my land line at (403)209-1628.
