I think you're off in 'the G looks close' estimate. Counting crossovers isn't enough here. After the safe play you have 13 crossovers and so does your opponent to get a checker off, if you stop there it looks close. If you realize that you now have a speed board and small numbers don't hurt you whereas they crush your opponent and all doubles play magnificent for you whereas your opponent only needs the bigger ones the G isn't so close after all. I'd play safe estimating that you don't forfeit that many gammons. (there are also formulas for this sort of thing but I'd rather apply common sense than bog people down with another formula they need to know)
