For years I have been playing people matches on XG (and Snowie before that) where we have separate bets on the match and on who plays better. If my opponent is clearly better or clearly worse than I am, we handicap the PR to make that part fairer, however, the better player still has an edge on who wins the match.

We also play "challenge-gammon" where we can challenge each other on every play and cube decision with a separate doubling cube. The player challenged can refuse the challenge (drop the cube) and just lose a point, accept the challenge for a 2 point bet, or even beaver it to 4.

Play a few matches this way and you will see what a terrific way this is to sharpen your game.
