There are tons of written material about the 5-point being one of the most important ones in backgammon. Playing 4 from 24 is an attempt to make the 5-point in white磗 homeboard, while playing 3 from 8-point is an attempt to make black磗 own 5-point. It is unlikely (but possible) that black makes both those points but very likely that black will make either one of those and that磗 still very valuable.
