Variance Reduction Question

In Response To: Variance Reduction Question (Michael Depreli)

I used to do a lot of 0-ply/0-ply (gasp!) gnubg rollouts. For those, variance reduction is relatively very expensive - it slows them down by a factor of ~20, whereas with normal settings, the slowdown from using VR is negligible. Even so, VR was worth doing for most positions, although exceptions, i.e. positions complicated enough that VR didn't pay off, were not rare. I believe they are very rare for normal settings.
