I think you missed the mark a little there - the speeding up of the game is not the same as multiplying the stakes.

I like Jacoby, I prefer playing with it than without it, but will play either if it comes down to it.

I think that it primarily encourages you to cash out a gin game early enough so that the person with 6 checkers on the bar doesnt have to sit and suffer through it all, or as soon as it has become obvious to both players that the best that can be done is a single win, hence turn the cube. Alternatively, it could be interpreted as a rule that gets the action moving quicker, and the excitement of the game is therefore enhanced by its new level of volatility.

Either way, as I said, I like it, prefer it to non-Jacoby
