whats the point of making 5pt there

Not only might you hit the opponent in the near future (sending him behind your covered 5pt), but also one of the possible ways you can win is in the priming / anchor-leaving battle (as I mentioned in my other post). You make the 5pt, then slot and make the points behind the anchor, waiting. The fact that you own your 5pt will make it harder for him to run at what might otherwise be an opportune time later, and if he is actually squeezed off (which could happen as you are behind in the race) you can attack him much more effectively if you own your 5pt.

$ (Slot, 13/8 6/5) is a strong play. Even if it isn't best, it has to be way better than 13/7, which is basically the same play without slotting.
