I also have a problem with purple and blue, but that problem is less severe, and for me is also a question of classification (is 90% blue plus 10% red purple or blue?). Some other combinations are much easier, say blue-green, yellow-green, yellow-blue, yellow-red are all without problems (and I think that is general).

I usually use red and blue if I want to differentiate font colors on a screen.
