In the first position, hit and then as safe as possible, so 13/11* 3/2, and start looking for the cube if missed. You must hit, because after 13/10 you are hardly up in the race, whereas if you hit and the return is missed, you have a very sizable edge, with cube access, which would be close to a win. With an upcoming cube turn, minimize risk, so 3/2.

BTW - you may have a cube before rolling.

In the second position, wait. After hit and dance, you may have a cube, depending on the exact roll and play. The important thing is not only the number of shots, but also the pip count!
