The text says: "Splitting is clearly best since White is behind in the race and Black has only one checker back. Black wants contact or to make an advanced anchor and the split offers better chances of reaching these objectives."

The original text actually says, "...Black...White...Black..." I presume you changed the first two to accommodate your posted diagram (as I did) but you forgot to change the third one. It is inconsistent.

In my post, I quoted, "...White...Blue...White" (and put brackets around each, which is a standard way to indicate that they were intentionally changed from the original text).

It is interesting that the spiral-bound version of my book has the "Black" checkers in green. :)
